pageboy n. 1. ... 2. A hairstyle, usually shoulder-length, with the ends of the hair curled under smoothly in a loose roll.
~ The American Heritage Dictionary

Bangs are optional.

The wonderful thing about a pageboy is that it has so many different looks. Since it is long but doesn't quite touch the shoulders, both gravity and inertia make it move independently of the wearer so it seems almost animated. However, it is mostly interesting because it is very simple and simplicity is beautiful.

That analysis is an attempt to dignify my obsession but the pathetic truth is that I have that gene which makes me predisposed to fall in love with any woman in a pageboy. So here is my homage to the pageboy, alphabetically by first name...

Splitting Hairs

People sometimes insist that the hairstyles on this page are bobs and not pageboys. At the top of the page, I provide the American Heritage Dictionary definition of a pageboy. Many of the haircuts fit that definition, so there are some pageboys in this collection. My understanding, from a little internet research, is that a bob is shorter than a pageboy. However, shorter is a subjective term. Louise Brooks is definitely a bob. Furthermore, the hairstyle doesn't necessarily have to be shoulder length to be a pageboy; note that the dictionary definition says "usually" shoulder length. So the pageboy ends and the bob begins somewhere between shoulder length and bald. I put the line somewhere near the chin. If it's shorter than that, it's a bob. If longer, then it's a pageboy. The chin length criteria is not arbitrary because, if shorter than that, the hair is no longer altered by gravity and inertia; the hair doesn't move much; it's not alive; it's boring.

Submissions

I will accept submissions. Specific people that I'm looking for include: Diana Rigg, Paula Marshall, Hope Davis, Kelly McGillis in The Babe, and Gérard Depardieu. I list these because I've seen them or at least recall seeing each of them in a pageboy. Also Hayley Atwell in Brideshead Revisited and Christine Baranski in Mamma Mia! I'm almost certain that I've seen a photo of both Sonny and Cher in pageboys. I'd really like to get a copy of that; it's my Holy Grail of pageboy photos. I would also like to find better pictures of Rachael Leigh Cook, Calista Flockhart, Sela Ward, and Mary Tyler Moore.
